Candidates Lining Up For WA 8th District

October 2, 2017

This is a good district to flip! This district is gerrymandered but leaning Democratic currently.

David Riechart has announced he will not run for re-election in 2018. It turns out that 2018 is a really good time for GOP congress to retire. The Democrats have had an eye on the WA 8th district for a long time and 2018 may be the year to flip it to Democrats.

2018 is expected to be a wave election because of Donald Trump and his far right views. He is not the president of all Americans and it is not even disguised.

This information is fluid and Changes

Progressive Ways will be following these candidates and will be posting what we find. The following people are lining up to run:

Dr Kim Schrier -D

I am the daughter of an elementary school teacher and an aerospace engineer. I have been a pediatrician in Issaquah for 16 years, and I am committed to my community. Since the age of 16 when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, I have understood what it means to worry about health and health insurance. I believe that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. My family and friends span the political spectrum, and I’ve spent my life bridging divides. I have been fortunate to benefit from excellent public primary and secondary education, including my degrees in Astrophysics and medicine. I met my husband, David, at our 10-year high school reunion, and we teach our 8-year-old son, Sam, how important it is to stand up for things that matter and pursue a life of purpose. Jason Rittereiser -D

After attending DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, Jason returned to Washington to serve as a criminal prosecutor for King County. Now, as a lawyer, Jason works to protect the rights of employees, as a voice for Washingtonians who have faced discrimination in the workplace, had their wages stolen by their employers, or have faced injustice. Jason has dedicated his career to helping employees and their families get a fair shot in the workplace. Jason was selected by the King County Bar Association as its 2017 Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year. Please visit my web page.

Toby Whitney -D

I’m a progressive who knows how to get things done in Congress. I worked on the healthcare reform votes when I was a congressional staffer and I was a specialist in national security. I’m for healthcare for everyone (not just “access,” but actually having it). College has to be affordable–and community college should be free–as part of an all-of-the-above strategy for the economic mobility of the middle class and working class. I think Trade agreements need to create American jobs. I’m strongly pro-choice. I used to work for the Congressional Budget Office and I care about deficits. We should pay our bills. I’m also a strong internationalist — we need good relationships with our allies and an energetic response to Russia and China when they are acting against American interests. Like my neighbors in the 8th District I don’t think a regulation or tax is the solution to every problem. I’m a progressive Democrat with practical common sense. Please visit my web page.

Mona Das -D

Mona Das offers a fresh, dedicated voice for Washington’s working families. Mona’s bold, independent spirit and collaborative approach to solving tough problems is a refreshing change for voters in Washington’s 8th Congressional District. A committed public servant, Mona is building on a record of achievement that includes work on behalf of women’s and immigrants’ rights, investing in a sustainable economy, and ensuring access to quality education for every Washingtonian. Mona will be traveling the district listening and learning, engaging voters and volunteers, and with your help – raising the money it will take to win a Primary and defeat the incumbent Republican. Thomas Cramer -D

I will increase the pay of regular people, stop the growth of inequality, and oppose Donald Trump and the Republicans. I will lead the charge to end global warming, end attacks on women’s rights, LBGTQ rights, minority rights, and voting rights. I will push for Medicare for all and free college tuition.

Brian Kostenko -D

During almost his entire working career, Brian has worked in environments where labor reductions are the norm. For this reason, Brian’s main focus is on the financial security of the residents of District 8 and the State of Washington. Access to health insurance is a financial security issue, where nobody should face financial distress after injury or illness. Social security for elderly and disabled needs to be fully funded and continued in perpetuity.

He believes in continuous improvement, but understands the benefits of incremental progress. In regards to health insurance, Brian will push for Single-Payer health care, but knows that progress can be made with a Public Option and the expansion of Medicaid in all states.

Dino Rossi -R

Senator Rossi is the first Republican to run for David Riecharts seat. Senator Rossi is currently the state senator of the 45th Legislative District. He has announced his intent to run for the 8th Congressional District.
“Congress is broken and needs fresh leadership. Working together, I believe we can solve problems for the families and communities of Washington’s 8th Congressional District.”
