Dear Ms. Matteo :
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). I appreciate hearing your views on this important issue.
Nutrition programs are critical to our nation’s health and are an integral part of our social safety net. Throughout my time in the Senate, I have consistently supported efforts to increase access to, and funding for, vital food assistance programs, including SNAP, The Emergency Food Assistance Program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) . It is essential that we provide a helping hand to those who need assistance putting enough food on the table for themselves and their families.
I am deeply troubled by President Trump’s budget for Fiscal Year 2019 . Among many concerning proposals , his budget contains baffling, draconian cuts to SNAP, which would slash the program by more than 25% over the next decade. The president also proposed a perplexing change to the program, which would force those who need a helping hand to pick up a box of government-selected food.
Please know that I share your concern about keeping our children and families healthy and free from hunger. Every Congress since 2014, I have introduced the Stop Child Summer Hunger Act, which aims to fight child hunger during summer break by providing families who have children eligible for free or reduced-price school meals with EBT cards to buy food.
I will continue to fight to ensure nutrition programs are strongly funded. In order for our country to prosper, we need to make sure no one is left behind ; access to quality food is a basic human need and a key to success in so many areas of life. As a country, we need to make sure we are doing all we can to make this a reality for all Americans.
The views of Washingtonians are very important to my work. I will keep your thoughts in mind, and I encourage you to stay in touch.
