This week, we saw major developments in the fight to end family separation at the border.
→ On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration must reunite separated families within 30 days, and children under 5 must be reunited with their parents within 14 days.
→ Yesterday, Paul Ryan’s bill went down in flames in the House (we said this about Goodlatte’s bill last week, but this was quite the defeat). The final vote was 121 votes for the Ryan bill, and 301 against. A total of 112 Republicans couldn’t even stomach voting for his horrific bill.
→ Also on Wednesday, we found out that Justice Kennedy will retire at the end of July. His Supreme Court vacancy will have major, lasting implications on fundamental constitutional rights regarding immigrants, refugees, and people of color.
Things are moving quickly, and not much has changed for families who’ve been separated. The crisis at the border is still as urgent as ever.
Grassroots immigration groups like RAICES, United We Dream, Women’s Refugee Commission, and so many more have been showing up day after day to demand the end of family detention and to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It’s time to show up in every possible way we can to support their crucial work and fight for families everywhere.
This weekend, show up.
We’re proudly supporting the #FamiliesBelongTogether coalition led by National Domestic Workers Alliance, We Belong Together, ACLU, MoveOn, Women’s Refugee Commission, and others to organize mass mobilizations in DC and around the country.
And it doesn’t end on June 30!
Beginning this weekend through July 8, MoCs and their staff will be home for July 4 recess. This is your chance to make your MoCs answer to you, so make sure you’re ready to ask the hard questions. Indivisible groups have already registered 4⃣7⃣(and counting!!) recess events that can be found on our map here and, if there isn’t an event in your area, you can still plan and register an event on our map here! Check out our organizing toolkit for more information on how you can use recess to pressure your MoCs to end family separation.
When we show up, it’s important that we follow the lead of those most affected. By being an ally, you can support immigrants in your community in this fight, and know exactly where your support is needed. Check out our Immigrant Ally Toolkit for more ways you can help.
Show up this weekend with your friends, family, and neighbors in tow. Bring anyone and everyone you can recruit to your local event. We hope to see you there!
